Fern, an American Staffordshire terrier mix breed dog, is slowly recovering after being found with more than 850 porcupine quills in her face. She was taken in earlier this month by the Nova Scotia SPCA. She has had several hospital visits to remove the quills in what the SPCA said on Facebook was a race against time for vets to remove them. The longer they remained in her face, there was a chance they would break off and enter her body. Because of an ongoing investigation the SPCA cannot say where she was found. She continues to be cared for and is undergoing tests and taking medication for other complications. But, the SPCA says costs are mounting and are asking people to donate online here www.novascotiaspca.ca/fern.
